It took a Sunday but we done it...

Good morning. This is us and it is already about 10 A.M. on a Sunday morning – it’s Halloween actually. But, things have really changed course in the last 24 hours. Rich’s Mom had another fall early Saturday morning. Bud took her to the hospital and was met by his daughter. He called me when he couldn’t get a hold of Rich, but we got a hold of him through Bob. There was a little mix-up because Bob passed on the message that we’d called for Doug’s mom, but they eventually figured it out when Bob said to Rich that she had given the ambulance people trouble with the smoking. Rich and Bob came back from their fishing trip right away. He had gotten a hold of then Karen and they were talking about surgery.

We were there yesterday when the heart doctor came in and told her that if she didn’t have surgery most likely she would become an invalid and that would shorten her life span considerably. She said she would agree with whatever the doctors were telling her. That was a relief. He was supposed to wait for the orthopedic surgeon this morning, but there was going to be more tests. Then about 7:30 A.M., Karen called to say that most likely after the heart test she would be going directly into surgery.

Rich made a decision that we are a bit frustrated with in that he said we should stay here, but then we discussed options of me meeting him there later on or that we might join him for dinner near the hospital. Those options made me feel better. I don’t think he wanted to worry about me and that he wanted to focus on being just himself dealing with his mother’s crisis. I know I’m Rich’s best support, but he didn’t want to tie me up with just sitting around waiting. I didn’t like being left behind, but then we swore him to calling me when anything happened and that if he was even thinking should I call Ann, he should be calling.

I know that there will be other visitors, but I thought I had been good for Karen too. Bud was kind of quiet, but Karen had a lot to talk about. I think it’s good when we can talk together. I think in general girls talk more about a larger variety of things than guys do.

We ended up parking far away in the wrong lot, and we had a long winding walk to the room, and then later we got lost finding the car, but Karen and Bud happened to drive through and they saw us and offered us a ride. I later told her she probably saved our relationship … between the walking at the hospital and my long day with the store research … it had been quite a bit past my norm for being up and out.

For that part, I’m glad to have a little bit quieter of the day. We’ll talk about the stores in just a bit, but I need to calm down some first.

I think we noted Rich is on his way. We told him that he should call people last night, but he waited. After he found out about the surgery this morning he made calls. Feel pretty bad for him. I know he’s already worrying that his Mom won’t make it. Obviously many prayers are going out that are pulling for the best. I’m not going down the more negative path. Just going to say here that after surgery there’s going to be a lot of working things out – I made sure to tell Karen that we are willing to step up and do our part of the helping. Pretty much Bud and his family do most things within themselves. But, there’s no reason we can’t help.

Just today we’re here again doing it from the couch. Not so proud of that.

I suppose though the best thing would be to do as we do and that is through our writing. So with that … we should probably say something about the stores. I don’t know how much I’m going to remember, but I think that it’s important that we try.

First off, as noted we spent some good time on Friday getting prepared for what we were going to be doing. We went through and checked off the companies that we wouldn’t be going to. On this list there were a variety of things such as grocery or big box stores, religious, ethnic and specialty stores like comic books or text books. We brought our list of remaining stores (we’d gone out Friday to four) to about 20. Then because we’d had so many stores not work out the night before, we checked out the stores we had through the Internet. If they didn’t check out we crossed them off the list. It seems that sometimes stores come and go. I’m thinking for the smaller places it would be hard to compete with a big store.

After we got our list narrowed we divided it into three sections. They were the outliers, the ones toward Oak Brook and the store toward Oak Park. In the end as mentioned the outliers got taken care of Friday and the other two lists came down to nine stores that we were at yesterday. Even then, all the stores didn’t turn out to be stores. The first store was a bust, the second store was a small used paperback store, the third store was also a bust, but then we got to a Barns & Noble Bookstore.

That one turned out to be pretty big. It was the multi-store building in Oak Brook. We had good luck with parking all day, but we did find in general that the business of buying books is booming. We’re thinking it’s still a cheaper form of entertainment than many other things. There was special traffic yesterday too because of it being Halloween so there were special programs and projects in some of the bigger stores. It wasn’t too hard to find the psych section in the B&N store. It had though just a small psychology section and then specialty psych things like abuse and self-help. I don’t think we stayed long enough to look for an auto- or bio-graphical section, but we found that in some of the other stores.

They might have had one, but we always feel the need to make it a short trip because of our back. I didn’t see as many chairs around as I would have hoped.

I’m not sure what section our book is going to fall into. It could go psychology, self-help, or autobiography. I think my preference is to have it in psychology, because that section is very pronounced, but it would mean leaning on the “sicker” or “disorder” part than if it were to be listed under autobiography. I think there is a lot of competition in the auto-section because it appears a lot of people write books about themselves. I seemed to feel better about it when we noted that the Diary of Ann Frank was listed in the auto-section. There are obviously a lot bigger names than ours. Some of the people are the ones that we’ve been seeing on Larry King or on front covers when we do our Amazon or other bookstore searches.

I felt very humbled by the part where in consideration of these other big names, why someone would choose to pick up our book. At the moment, I don’t think we have anything to really go on except that we have a slight home town advantage. I was on one search on the computer and I found that autobiography’s are sometimes counted out most likely because there are so many of them.

But the second big store we went in to was a Border just around the corner also in Oak Brook. I had a feeling of much bigger space at the B&N than the Borders.

There is something to be said about it being homier in a store where everything reaches out to grab you, but by the time we got to the Borders in Oak Park, we were showing a better preference for the bigger space. The store in Oak Park was just miserable in that there were so many people about and the sound of shoppers, especially with kids was so much that it was hard to focus. The first Borders had a psych section, but the second one didn’t. It had philosophy and it had self help or improvement and they both had a lot of autobiographies. There were too many books in any of the stores for me to settle down and look through the gist of who the people were writing. Most often you just get a sense by the books that are facing out. Most often what we did was to look for the “G” section. We found in some bookstores it was harder than others. For example if the author’s name was Smith, but he’d written a book on Freud, it would be listed in the “F’s.”

Some of the names were familiar though most likely already mentioned such as Freud, Fromm, Gardner, Frank and even Bill Gates. I think because some of these names were SOOOO big, it left me thinking that I probably won’t be in many bookstores. I didn’t find many books on multiples no matter where I looked. I think the best method of finding these books is to go on-line and I seriously don’t think anyone really looking for multiples would look anywhere other than on-line because of the shortage of space on the shelves and by being such a small name. One day maybe I will have the number of books that make it its own phenomenon, but also maybe there will be a few discouraging comments that will keep people from purchasing the series. There are so many unplayed variables that it is ridiculous to get stuck at this point with it.

I think pretty much it is going to be like with the blog. You really have to figure that the book or writing is all about us sitting down and figuring out where we were or have been, or are going and then to let go of the rest of the “hype-part” of the production. I’m thinking that we are going to fill a small niche and for that we will choose to be very happy.

Yesterday before Rich got home, we figured that we should do some more scrounging of book stores. I hadn’t an idea what was out there before. I knew that when I was college and young adult age, my ex and I would go to a lot of book stores, but it is another time, place and the variety of books is that much larger. We had gone through the first list of one hundred store names and we ended up visiting 16 stores in general, and from that the list was so brought down. We found out that our favorite bookstore from earlier days when living in Oak Park was closed down.

That store was Barbara’s, but it seems to appear that there are more Barbara’s listed but maybe more upscale places such as downtown or the north shore.

There was one other store that panned out, but they had a very small section for psych books and the store was pretty small. That was the Book Table in Oak Park, AND I’m thinking they took used books. Hehehe maybe to get in one of these stores would be to keep a couple copies around for a few years, and then present it.

Maybe hand it around a bit to scuff it up like cars driven by Golf pros to be sold later as a used vehicle.

So, I would say out of the first one hundred stores within about 0-6 miles out there were only the three Borders, the Barns & Noble, and the Book Table. I would still like to try either some textbook stores or medical stores, which seem to be coming up in the second hundred. I’m thinking that the Books-a-million or Book Rack might be found in other locations, though having closed up in the particular sections we were looking at. I was surprised how many stores were listed at houses, so I’m thinking those businesses tracked down just a particular interest and that their books were mostly on line. Maybe they were middle men in the book arena. I think I’m going to find in many stores that if the purchaser says no in one store, it’s pretty much no in their entire chain. Maybe you have to prove some selling numbers or maybe you have to be giving book readings. I’m not sure how small an author you can be and still give presentations. I should have been asking for schedules of authors coming in as we were out there to get a better idea what that is all about. I might email or call to get that information. I notice that many Internet sites will be behind in their news information.

The other possibility we’re going to need trying is in looking into libraries.

Maybe today we can do some checking too into books published by Ingram’s Books to see where they are likely to be going too. Hmm, just thought of that … maybe we will take a few moments. I forgot that we have a library card now and can look in the Swan section.

AHA! We checked out the Library system and these 47 books were listed. It’s kind of funny that our first research from Amazon picked up 47 books and now there are 47 books from the local libraries. Cool cool! We had them listed by age. We reserved the first two on the United States of Tara and the Herschel Walker story.

Thatta girl! Rich will be so pleased we are ordering books and not buying. We are really trying, you know? I want to become very knowledgeable with what is out there. This is a good place to begin.

Hmm, looking down the line at this now … it would seem there is a little mish-mash of stuff in here. Mostly the list has to do with multiples, but then there is a lot missing in between and I’m not really interested in the general psych books where they offer only a paragraph or two … We’ll probably check them off the list too.

I’m thinking that on our web page we should try to do something like we did before in making comments of the books. I don’t want to list the problematic parts as much as the parts that were helpful to read. It would mean going back over a few books that we’ve gotten for the Kindle. Maybe not today though … we’ll have to see if I’m that organized and how things go with Mom. Maybe I should start from the beginning one book and from the ending one book. That’s an idea. But, for now we’ve got enough. Best figure this out with reality in mind. There’s just so much time.Funny I didn’t notice the timing, but the book on Eve came out a year before we were born and Sybil came out the year we started high school. I know that I saw that movie and had looked forward to it when it got to TV., but I remember so little of it. I’ll have to get that too.

Maybe I should take a few moments … its 11:30 A.M. and I want to jump in the shower in case Rich calls and wants me to meet him. Hold on.

Ok, that’s better. We gave Rich a call too, but he didn’t answer. It could mean too many things to guess.

Ok, plotting on … we checked over our email and Facebook. It’s really nice when people say things because they care about your or the people you are talking about. I had put out a note this morning about Rich’s Mom. We’ve messaged out a few things too to Vickie, Julie and a second Vickie … Rich’s Mom’s Sister’s Daughter and her husband. Ok, basically Rich’s cousin. We met her here a while ago … they are from Michigan.

Feeling that lost sense again about not knowing what to be doing. I KNOW we have to think of something. I know … we did some work with our Web page in the last couple of days. That went pretty well. We rekindled an old associates account we hadn’t been using from Amazon and it seems there are a lot of improvements in their program. I’ll show you.

It goes on like that … but we’ve got about 70-80 books saved under autobiographies. I think that if someone were looking at my book we’d like them also to know what was out there. This should support the idea we just stated as to reading books on multiplicity. It would be better if we could name things specifically, but even if we had a better general idea of what was going on out there, we could really be a lot more useful in our writing.

Looks like they are playing it again … we’ve got taped “Restoring the American Dream” with Fareed Zakaria from CNN. They showed the show this morning, but it was much too concentrated for me at the time. It does seem that we’re picking up and looking for ideas on how the United States and other countries gets out of this problem they are in economically. It seems there are so many families involved that you can’t be human and not know someone who has been affected.

Speaking of … I don’t know if we told you or not, but Rich has another job that is supposed to start tomorrow though I’m not sure if it will because of his mother’s state. He has a new job as a job developer for people with mental illness in the Skokie area for a place called Old Orchard. I hope he really does well. Basically he’s got to get 8 people hired for at least 90 days. Maybe I told you this already … just seems like a long time coming. They told him about the job about a week ago. Normally, Rich would have time to take off for his mother. I’m hoping he doesn’t get real overwhelmed the first week. We’re going to have to pay attention to how we can be helping him.

We’re not doing a very good job though. We’ve been hassling him since he’s been home. I think it surprised some of our parts and we’ve been trying to work it through, but we’re not all as generous. Basically, we had told him that we were appreciating our break from him and that we had to readjust ourselves in him being here. I think a part of that is that Rich can be a mother hen. He’s working on the part where he doesn’t ask me as much where we are going when we stand up from the couch, but he tells us after he’s found us that that is what he had thought.

Yesterday about 9:00-9:30 P.M, but we got up used the washroom and then went to sleep in the bedroom. He came in and turned on the light to make sure we were ok.

It’s a very sweet thing to be so concerned, but sometimes we like it like now where our mind is able to think whatever without any impediments. We just wanted to fade out and not talk about what he wanted us to do before we went to bed. Of course the part of being smooched is almost worth the hassle, but still.

As expected we got a full dose of him worrying this morning. I know he’s really worried about his Mom, but he can’t do much there except to be there. We understand, but he’s got left over worry in him that he’s trying to transfer over to us. He wanted to talk about diets again this morning and we didn’t want to hear about it. I don’t know what it would take to make it the right time, but I know we’re getting close, especially if we are going to want to be out and amongst people. That isn’t Rich’s chief concern, but he’s willing to use it if it works in getting us out there. He went as far to mention the gym word, but then he added that with a smorgasbord of things he wanted me to stop doing. We told him this is usually what he tries. Instead of worrying over his weight which is creeping up again … he puts all his energy into fixing me. It just can’t work that way … I’ve got to own up to my own motivation and drive.

Hmm, there was Rich. It’s still hurry up and waits type of game. She’s gone through quite a few tests and if this last test comes through they will go through surgery. She is up and aware, but I’m not getting a whole lot of information from Rich. He’s already tired. He only slept in until about 7:15 A.M. This morning so it means he got 7-8 hours sleep. Normally that would be enough, but he was deprived from being up early to fish. I think maybe later I should call Karen, I’d get much more information that way. Hmpf!

Ok, you … Rich is already saying he’s got to do this and this and this … and we said ok, reasonably you can’t do all that, you are going to need letting some of it go … but he’s like I can’t let any of it go. So it was like THIS is why you need me. He had prefaced that by saying that we were going to need helping him this week. We had asked for our first task, but didn’t get one. Looking around here … we’re glad we started the dishwasher yesterday. Probably we should empty it before he gets back though because there are a few stray dishes from last night.

How did we get from surgery to washing dishes in a half page? Probably like them … it’s just such a helpless time of not knowing how to help that the smallest things become important. I saw that general track at the hospital. When one waiting person speaks to the next, there is an exchange of giving that person all the knowledge on or the other had missed. When a new person comes into the group … sometimes the same story gets told until you all have memorized each others’ stories and can fill in the blanks. I can appreciate that Rich is leaving me out of it, but still feel bad for not being there. I know … I’m like the pinch hitter maybe saved for another round. Rich did mention something about dinner. So maybe he’ll let me join him about then. It is going to be hard to say what for when because nobody knows the schedule of when the next doctor shows up or someone says let’s get this one on the road.

I think part of Rich’s thought on leaving me here is that he can transport easier the thought that he’s traded places with me so is now sitting in his comfy chair.

I think the situation he is in is very stressful. They started talking about nursing homes and they are going to try getting his Mom into a better one than before. I think she liked it because they let her go out for smokes, but I don’t think it’s going to be this easy this time. I’m having a hard time even hoping that they could get into some place that offers real rehabilitative care and that old people aren’t just left to themselves. I know not having these kinds of answers is what adds stress to the family. Rich is I believe letting Karen do more work, but she has just got a full time job offer. She’s in the same situation as Rich as far as needing to be somewhere in the day. Rich probably has a little more flexibility.

We were grumbly too in that we saw how tired Rich was, but he stayed true to his center in not giving up any real control. We’re talking simple things like letting me drive. He can sit on the passenger side when his fishing buddies are driving, but he can’t let me drive. I dislike that situation very much. He was making things unsafe like crossing over lanes in the middle of the intersection. Just isn’t really fair to me at all. The only problem there is that if we were to get in an accident it would be better than he hurt me than if I hurt him. I don’t know where that kind of logic comes from, but pretty much how I feel. None-the-less … I didn’t want to get hurt last night. It took me a while to get settled down and then we just held a hand … that’s pretty normal in a car ride between us. It’s Rich’s PREFERENCE that I’d be massaging his hand, but … he had to make due.

Hmm, kind of frustrated again … we’re thinking we’re more of a bother than a help.

This is probably not going to help. I think our horoscope said this morning something about hiding under a shell or mask. It was a slight take on Halloween, but what else did it mean?

Hmm, this is what it says, “I am quite adept at hiding in my shell whenever I experience a sense of insecurity, fear, or moodiness. This can offer you sweet respite on occasion, but if you do it too often it can result in a feeling of isolation. Today, though, you can disguise yourself as anything you want to be, so you won’t have to hide out just because you feel you don’t fit in. If you’re feeling grumpy or sad, you can put on a mask that makes you look happy. You may be surprised that, after awhile, you’ll actually feel happy. In the spirit of Halloween, give it a try.”

Ok, insecure, fearful, moody, isolated, not fit in, grumpy or sad … well like I can go with ALL of that. Hmm, happy face, happy face … where did I put that?

Do something unique custom made … work locally … make yourself indispensable learn a different craft work well with others synthesize … learn a language traditional or through math. These are a few ideas … we turned on Fareed for a moment, but he’s done now.

I think I’m doing pretty much through the writing something unique, art and craft-like … who is to say in the beginning stages of a dream what is going to work and what isn’t. My thoughts are though if this is something I could do couldn’t others as well. Granted I do give a lot of time to the writing. As an example today at this moment It’s about 1 P.M. and I started about 3 hours ago … and grant it there are a few pictures, but we’re on page 13. Could you see the advance of having done that same thing year after year? Surely it must be worth something.

It seems a lot of my time focuses on multiplicity, but we don’t write a whole lot on it. We’ve already stated we are going to do some reading, but that’s only part of it. Pretty much the only reason you would want to study or now about a multiple? Is it that we have something unique to offer? I don’t know maybe singletons are looking over at the greener grass on the other side. We’ve already gone into quite a bit of detail in stating we don’t believe multiplicity has to be sensationalized. I think that is the only value – that of entertainment that is being utilized now. Things like Oprah and the United States of Tara seem to help emphasize that the point of multiplicity is in its entertainment value.

Wouldn’t it be something else if people just started getting to know one another not through all the famous accounts although those too, but about everyday people.

Isn’t it something that could or should hold our attention? I’m thinking about the political race between Obama and McCain. One of the most famous through that series of events was “Joe the Plummer.” He stood for just your everyday kind of guy. Because he was in the spotlight of so many people … he took a whole new status of hero. Until of course we found another different hero and then the world moves on, with only thought that one day they are going to be playing a series of pictures about “remember when?” And, you will see the plumber as he was and then is and you will find the passage of time just incredible.

We haven’t thought about it, but maybe that is part of us putting together a series as we are. Maybe we should try to put this together more seriously. I think we’re in need of a new idea and term to describe it. I’m looking at the idea as being away of journaling the life of everyday people and that somehow the reading of each others’ manuscripts and books lead us into finding something of ourselves or our world that is new and different and will succeed the hardships that befall us in this direction or the other.

Maybe one reason that it could be so important is that it would help us in the harder years build up our sense of hope and dream for the future. That would be quite a feat wouldn’t it? And, there would some vicarious addition to human culture in that somehow we would need to learn and grow from this kind of development. How is it that we would be better human beings if we took into the adventures of learning from others? How could people ad input … just thinking now about a little sci-fi where we step into some kind of pod and sense each other microscopically. Maybe we could mix this with Rich’s thoughts on trying to help one another. We should have an avenue of helping ourselves or the next guy. So basically than you would need some kind of format to catch the consequence of your learning sense after getting to know someone else … basically you are inventing the moccasins of your friend, family or neighbor to walk in.

Hmm, hate to interpret a flow of thought, but we just got word that Rich’s Mom went into surgery. We talked to Rich for a few moments, and then went out to check Facebook and email. When we were at Christina’s site we noted that she had a Marine video of them dancing to Thriller, so I watched that. It was a real pick me up for the day. Got to love them darn Marines!

We also sent a $127 phone bill to Rich to pay from my account. It’s much better than it used to look. I think the EVO was a good idea. What did people used to spend their money on before cable and phone? We also sent out a few notes on getting out voting. We turned on the TV volume after seeing President Obama giving a speech. Had to turn it off though … too much politics … My thought is just get out there and do it. We did it Thursday … we encourage others to vote EVEN if it’s against my guys or gals. Just something you should do.

Ok, that was my speech.

I’m thinking I’m pretty caught up in my writing … cat is sitting here next to me looking sweet. So, maybe we should figure out what to do with the next several hours. I’m thinking Rich won’t be until about 6 P.M. or so. They didn’t eat lunch before the operation so they aren’t going to have dinner on schedule. He said it was just the three of them Bud, Karen and Rich. Ok, you know my feelings there.

Maybe we should look at our book store tour. I think we should draw out our map … be back!

WooHOO! We’re back! The surgery took just under 1 ½ hours and it seems to have been successful. The doctors say they will have her on her feet tomorrow YEEKS!

That’s mighty fast. Rich got the name of a nursing home his in-laws were at that had done well for them … he didn’t ask, but we found them and gave them a call and they have openings. She said just to have the hospital social worker give their social worker a call and all the arrangements will be made. That was really good news so we called Rich. He says the hospital won’t even think about it until tomorrow, but we’re thinking that is Rich’s normal pessimism. The social worker is on call 24/7, but if he wants to wait til tomorrow we aren’t going to give him grief.

I thought it and then it seems to be the case that he’s felt some relief in knowing there is a good place that will take her. It’s in Joliet which is 37 minutes or 28 miles from us straight down 55. And, is only 7-8 minutes away from Karen and about … WOW 38 minutes and 27 miles to Millington which is where Bud and Mom live … it’s PERFECTLY in the middle … and exactly straight east for Bud. Good deal good deal!

Oh-oh better watch that … we were so excited we called Rich but he’s in recover with his mother and they are having OTHER kinds of problems. Basically, she’s being ornery Rich says. She’s demanding her walker so she can go out and have a smoke. Yup, yup … that’s our girl! Awe … in makes me feel all better.

Not so much probably though for Rich and Bud and Karen. They have got their hands full.

Good time to give them a break pretty soon. I bet they are thinking they should have eaten first. HA! That will get them!

I guess it is back to our map chore Hehehe.

Cool looks like the state of Texas! We start at the middle A and M is the beginning/end point. We start NE and work our way up the clock until we’re straight north and then back home. It’s Brookfield, to Chicago to Chicago Ridge, to Downers Grove, Lombard, and Norridge and back to Brookfield which is without stopping 3 hours and 13 minutes or 79.7 miles. This will be our second trip. I’m not sure if it’s this next weekend or the following though that Rich is taking me overnight to the band concert. This trip will be reserved for the next free Saturday. I figure it will be just less than 5 gallons of gas or a half a tank so about $18, but getting .50 per mile for mileage that will come to $32 saved in the long run. It’s for business though so it should be good. I think on the next trip around, I will ask if they have any book signings coming up.

Hmm, Rich just called again … he said he’d be home in a couple of hours. It’s 4:15 P.M. now. He also said he ordered Chinese and paid for it with a credit card including tip. WooHOO, hopefully, I’ll be able to wait until it gets her AND he gets here. Better get dressed though *sigh* I do think there is a lot more to the book store trips than just the immediate getting knowledge of the stores. Pretty much I figure it is a big deal getting me out of the house on a weekend, getting in the car and driving to local places where I have to get out of the car and be around people … that part is just HUGE! Hmm, I’m thinking I might call to the stores we’ve already visited and ask if they have any speakers or book signings coming up … what we had decided earlier. There were like 5 book stores of real interest in the first loop … three Borders, one Barnes & Noble, and one Book Table. This is a business and someone has got to do it!

Hmm, we didn’t finish our think up above saying how we were going to change the world by people listening to the little guy. Not the big guy listening, but the little guys listening to each other. Maybe it’s just that we have trouble responding to each other … there are like complications that goes on in families, but it seems that a lot of people are looking at the optimal space of the computer. Maybe that’s how you can account for so many people on Facebook. I can’t tell you how important it was to be listened to today as we were going from a distance through Rich’s Mom’s day. I didn’t feel as alone. I’m hoping that I rested enough through the day although writing throughout like the olden days. I want to be able to treat Rich nice when he comes through the door. My guess is that he’s going to be emotionally drained. We figured that we’d eat just ONE small little egg roll to keep us from getting grumpy and then we’d share the rest of the meal with him  That works, right?

Chinese should be here any moment and we picked up around here again – emptied that old dishwasher. Is there anything else? Hmm, what would impress another little guy like us? Ahh maybe if he read there was a nice drink for Rich when he got home. That would be nice! Well maybe more pleasing to Rich than the other little guys, but a point would be made! This day ended with a happy ending.

BUT, there is one more thing. We’ve got about an hour and a half before Rich gets home, what is the next and next projects on the horizon. Maybe it is a good time to edit if we have what needs to be edited at home. I’m not sure where that last left off … maybe I should check the old mail, hmm?

Short note for Saturday ... longer one coming up today

Good afternoon. This is me. It’s about 1:45 P.M. on a Saturday and we’re just settling down to writing. I think I’ll probably go on for a few moments so might as well sit back … nothing ahead for the rest of the day than this and then maybe some editing. I’m not so sure how ambitious we are with all that. But boy … let me tell you … did we get some ambitiousness into us this weekend!

We had thought that we were going to talk to Carolyn and Maria, but then they ditched us. I know she’s said a couple times very assuredly that she would be the one to call, but she didn’t call. I’m pretty sure it’s because she was busy, but it was disappointing to wait all week to hear from them, but then there wasn’t anything. I had reminded her on Thursday that we’d talk on Friday. I just don’t know what to think of that except I know I got to let it go. We didn’t want to do anything though because we thought we miss something. We got home around 3 and then waited the next 3 ½ hours for the call. By then I figured it was 4:30 P.M. their time and I know they leave about 4 P.M. so there was nothing to do – though we were a little cranky about it.

What we figured out to do while we were waiting was to straighten out the book stores we wanted to go to. We made SOOOO much progress on that. I’m thinking that maybe later on tonight instead of more editing, we could set out another schedule of events for tomorrow. But, I think that would take some gas money and I don’t think we have any. I’m not sure, but I don’t think I took the one hundred Rich was going to leave. I thought about it today, but it wasn’t there.

Did we almost forget Thursday?

Good morning. This is me. We’ve got a few moments to write this morning before going into work. We figured this is the last day to pre-vote and we’d like to get it done so we don’t hassle over it when there is likely to be more people on the regular voting day. I don’t think that mid-term elections are like filling the lines to the brim, but I really would like to get it done before there is more hassle. It’s about 7 A.M. now and we will leave here at 9 A.M. WooHOO!! Two hours to write!

Not sure where we’re going here yet. I think the last we left off we were talking about going to the book stores with Rich. We’d talked about the Borders experience, but we thought we should add here that there was one more stop. We stopped at a CVS pharmacy because there bookstores were noted on our list. I probably won’t be going to any more. It was a pretty bleak experience. There was only one shelve about four feet wide of books. They had about 100 titles. Some were the “top sellers” and then there were a few others that were supposed to be new releases. From what I could see … 9/10’s were romance novels … YEEKS! Probably really don’t need to do that experience again.

Where Borders had been warm, friendly and inviting CVS was cold, stark, and unwelcoming. I’d be afraid if I got my book in there it would shiver to pieces. I don’t usually shop at CVS although they are right down the street. But, I for sure won’t be going back. I’m afraid if I got my book in there it would catch a cold!
So … moving on … the big deal of the day yesterday was that we got to meet up with our new accountant. His name is Dennis and he’s got his two daughters also CPA’s working with him. I just saw the front office and it was pretty small and crowded.

There were papers all over the time. They really have to come up with more filing space Hehehe. It was perfect though. It was small and family owned and he was a nice guy with a twinkle in his eyes. I found him to be very earnest and down to Earth. He was modest and seemed aware that we really didn’t have enough money to do anything big. He isn’t going to be the kind of person that affords his grandchildren’s fortunes from us. And, some of what was said was that he can teach me how to take care of the easy stuff.

There are going to be two points of contact coming up. We will contact him after our first sales and he will help us arrange to get our state sales tax information up to par. He says that we have 20 days after the month of our sales to report the taxes. And, then I think it is going to be a monthly deal after that. And, then the second point of contact, will be to do the taxes next year. I think that H&R Block charged about $187 and Dennis said that it would cost about $200 … so I thought that was fair. He said something about doing a “C” form. I think that’s about it, don’t remember exactly, but he said that the business could run at a deficit for three years, before the government expects a profit or otherwise they figure your doing something wrong. I HOPE I’m doing better than that!

He liked what we were doing in recording. He was quick to catch that we had to get $1000 from my mother to start the business. And, he seemed to skim down the other expenses and hold it well in his head. Rich suggested last night that we start tracking mileage too. Hold on we’ll do that for a moment.

Our first trip to Borders in La Grange

Good morning. Hmm, why is my script so big? Eh, it will sort itself out with the wash. We’re using our netbook this morning. Sometimes it falls out of vague, and then comes the time when we realize we can put our feet up on the couch if we use it and then it is worth all the effort of charging batteries. It seems we are also still into Judy Garland … these things as well slip into vogue … who knows how these things work out.

I just got a little drifty because I’m listening to her song Born in a Trunk Medley and its 15 minutes long. It ends with a really big Swanee River.

Ok, maybe too much before 6:00 A.M. We turned on Kitaro. We needed something without so many words pulling us away from our typing. Sheese! We had a pretty interesting night last night. I want to jump you to the part right away where Rich and I went out. This was a very big deal, because usually you can push me out with a 30 foot crane. But, I did it and I was the one who was asking to go and we were just feeling so alive … it was like a miracle!

Basically, we were just following the advice of Marie our Marketing person. She said that we needed to go out and get a feel for the bookstores and get an idea of the space we would be in with the books. Wow! That was a pretty big deal. It was a windy day out yesterday and I remember that the sky was a little strangely colored kind of a greenish glow. Hmm, maybe because it’s getting close to Halloween – yeah that must be it. We were going past a lot of houses made up to be scary, but sometimes just because you see spiders webs and bats you’re not really scared, but you are paying attention none-the-less. We had three stores on the radar and we ended up going into a fourth.

The first store turned out to be inside of some kind of school run by the nuns. It had said Joseph’s, but Rich was right it was St. Joseph’s. So, we kept on going … and the next one was real close too it was kind of spooky though so we didn’t go in there either. It was a small place on a back set of stores and it turned out to be like a spiritual occult like place and we for sure weren’t going in there! We had saved up the for sure place next … It was a Borders. I can’t believe I’ve lived here for 10 years and have never been inside Borders … it’s in La Grange proper, but that is just the next village over. We go past it all the time – anytime we head west. Rich pulled into the parking lot right off the train place – it’s a very busy store because tons of people get out and then again maybe it’s just handy.

Shoot … we got to take a shower. Rich has gotten up and it seems like nothing is getting done. What is going on with that? And we finally got to some of the right music. We’re listening to Nature Sounds – mostly the ocean.

Back again. And, now it’s crickets on the pond. Hmm, no wonder my kitties are having so much trouble adjusting this morning. What? Ok, ok … we’re going to do bookstores. I remember.

Anyway we got to Borders and it’s a nice corner door and Rich was deciding to stay in the car with his own book, and the door WAS very inviting so we gathered our courage and walked quickly to it allowing it to pull us in. It was a feeling of an old fashioned store. The first thing you notice are that there are people all over the place and it’s two stories inside and there are books galore and all kinds of signs suggesting you turn one way or another. It was very inviting. I was also aware of the cash registers to the left. This place surely wanted to separate you from your money! Oh and we noticed a help wanted sign, but it was in maintenance so we pretty much skipped that idea. Beside … Rich just GOT a job! He starts on Monday.

I started to read the top of the shelves where the signs were thinking I would need to orientate myself. It seemed like the new stuff was on low shelves or tables to the front of the store, and then to the right were local city attraction stuff and cooking and such, but when I took a larger scan of the place I was extremely happy to see the sections on Psychology and then secondly knowing I wouldn’t have to climb those stairs. Pswhoo! The psychology section was toward the back. We studied the heading at the end of the shelves and decided that we should look in general psychology first. That was a good idea … and we found unlike the book store at Wal-Mart … the books were in order by last name.

We started our search from the beginning of the shelves, which were VERY high. It was uncomfortable looking that high and we noticed the last shelve toward the bottom was hard to read too. But, we started again from the top and worked our way down. It seemed there were some books that were favored and faced cover forward so that there were multiple copies of the same book directly in back of the first.

The majority of the books though you just got a side view. It seemed that the face forward books were primarily on “the mind.” There were other books though that one might expect in psychology such as stress, anxiety, depression, bi-polar, Borderline Personality, obsession and so forth.

I didn’t go through it as slowly as I could have, but I found two books on multiplicity. One was the book I just read where the author was a psychologist who was treating a multiple that he said he integrated, and the other was a sourcebook. I’d obviously seen both books on-line. But, it was interesting to know which books the bookstore had picked up.

I think the part that made me the happiest was that when I got to the G section … first it was the middle of the shelf which made it easy to look without struggling to see too high or too low. The next part was that I discovered that if I were to get into this bookstore, I would be on the same shelve as Freud and Fromm. Wow!

That was fantastic news. To be specific I would be between Gardner the guy who wrote about multiple intelligence and Gorman or something like that … I can’t find the Gorman at Amazon so maybe I got that name incorrect, but basically, I would be ON THE SHELVE with Freud! WooHOO!!! Wouldn’t that be something!

There is a lot in between though in that first we need to hope that our local Borders is going to be interested in putting us on the shelve. Compared to all the books written on multiplicity or by multiples, there selection is actually very slim. The general psychology took up almost two sections and then it switched over to child psychology. I don’t know how I feel about being in the middle of so much abnormal psychology, but then I suppose that’s what happens and should be expected. I don’t know where else unless they had a section on autobiography’s or memoirs. I didn’t hang around too much longer to check that out. I felt like I was so brimming with information and excitement that I’d better leave before I burst!

There was one other thing that was strange. I opened one of the books while I was there – from the shelf I would be on. And, there it was … words that were saying something to someone. I had a very unreal feeling in that it could have been me that was being picked up and browsed through and there you would have it all about my love life, or what had happened at work or even that I’d listened to Judy Garland! It was just surreal. I didn’t know what to do with that information though I found myself quickly putting the book back on the shelf as if I’d pried into something much too personal. Yeeks!

I guess that is going to take some getting used to, hmm?

It’s about time though that I get ready for work. How about now? Yes, maybe a good idea. Remember today is the day we get to meet the accountant. I sure hope he and his family are nice. I liked it when she said they were just a small family business. Perfect!

Lost between the rafters

Afternoon this is me. We’ve just got a little time before we go home so figured we’d take a break and write up a few notes. We’re listening to Judy Garland now and we’re thinking it is pretty cool stuff. I don’t know if I could explain the mood, but can boast that it’s pretty happy. Not sure otherwise where we are. I might have lost something that I’d written before which would make me pretty crabby, because it was a substantial entry. I’m looking for the one where we completed the 18 questions. Did we do that from home or work and if so where is it? Did it get erased? I’m thinking that it might have been under something else as to title. Let me look once more, k?

Nope, nope … not finding it - I thought it was written Monday, just got to let it go, because that’s the kind of kink that could dent one’s armor. OTHERWISE speaking - we’re in a pretty good mood. We had a bit of a scare today and then decided that the whole thing with the horoscope is that we are supposed to stop being afraid. My thought here though is that Rosa now knows not only about Rich, but about the book. I had printed out documents and because they were in color I sent it up to the front, but then on the way up to the front Theresa stopped me to talk about a client. When we got up there Rosa was holding our papers, and it seemed she was reading them. She was also holding onto papers that she’d printed out for Sr. Theresa, so we’re thinking that one set got confused with another, and that it wasn’t malicious, but that she’s now got “secret stuff” types of information.

We told Sr. Theresa about it, and then she called back still thinking of it and asked why we were sending things up front that were private. We explained … I don’t think Sr. really cared one way or another. In my heart of hearts I wish too that this whole sneakiness business were over. I’ve always hated the secrets. It would be best if they knew I was with Rich and I was writing a book. Then I wouldn’t have to feel so diabolical. But, saying that, I wasn’t quite ready for it to happen today and I will acknowledge that there’s something to be said about privacy. I suppose it will just be, one way or another, we’ll maintain one way or another. Just feel bad for Rich … he’s the one that is going not to like the difference in others knowing. Quite girls … it will be ok.

In other news, we’ve been getting some editing done so that’s been good, but we were kind of lonely today too. I didn’t have much official business with Friesen. I did complete the acknowledgement and the dedication and sent that in to Carolyn. I haven’t any idea what to expect from Maria, but I did send out a hello to Natalie. Someone should talk to me!

I was happy though to get a surprise note from someone who had been listening to our podcasts. There have been a few others, but it always comes as a surprise and a happy one at that to be remembered. We wrote back to her and felt appreciative for her attention. Her name is Debbie Arrington. Nice, hmm?! She said that she’s tried, but failed to write consistently in a blog. Chances are though she’s found out how to be consistent at least with quilting which seems to be something beyond me at the moment.

I did tell her that we did something FINALLY with the sewing last night. It took Rich a while to get us there. We were restless without ourselves and didn’t know what to do. We were done with the “demand” editing for the first proof, and we weren’t really into working on the 2nd book. We had needed SOME kind of break. So Rich was like … why don’t you work in your quilting room. What? What? I don’t know how to do that! He was pretty convinced though if we went back to the room that we’d figure it out. We asked him if he wasn’t going to get lonely for us though. Ok, like who’s to say who’s lonelier than whom? Now that I think of it we were kind of confused all around. Our mouth was glued together, which is usually one of the cues that Rich uses to know that we should be taking our medicine, but it really was too early for all that.

About then he got in his mind that if WE peeled the apples he would make a couple of his mini-pies. Well of course that always seems to be a good idea.

Hmm, just lost ourselves to looking at the biography of Judy Garland – she sure had a super-stared life. We kind of lost ourselves to confusion again. It’s about time to be going home. Rich’s football season is over and basketball won’t be started until mid-November. Wow can’t believe we’re almost up to that month. It seems impossible. But, here it is already the 26th. I’m imagining that we’re going to have Halloween on Friday, but I haven’t heard much about it yet. I’m pretty much out of the current stuff.

Waiting and waiting...

Good afternoon. This is just me. We have a few moments before the staffing and we are all ready so we thought we’d write down a few notes. The day has gone pretty well so far. Rich came in about 11 A.M. and stated that he has a new job. WoOHOO!!! I don’t think it pays well, but his hours are very flexible. He is responsible to get eight people with mental illness working for at least 90 days. That’s pretty much it. It seems to fill the niche he was looking for. So we’re all good with that.

We completed the editing work that we had in front of us. And, we got the copy back to Carolyn exactly by 11:00 A.M. That was the goal. If you asked me over the weekend if it was possible, I might have said no, because it seemed like such a big obstacle. But, now that it’s done … it is like why sure, why not? You are familiar with the other things we were working on and we also want to note for the record that we have an appointment with the accountant we’d found through the web pages yesterday. We will meet him on Wednesday at 3:30 P.M. WooHOO!!!

I told Rich about it later and I got his usual grumbles and he stated that it costs him $500 to talk to his accountant. Well, I figure that’s something we are going to need knowing. I told him the first appointment was free and he said that they are going to get me involved in something because he knows me and I said probably.

So then we told him when the appointment was and said that he’s invited to come along if he so chooses. He didn’t think so, but we’ll wait it out. I will be going one way or another. It would really be better to talk freely without Rich’s doubts, but we want him on board with what we’re doing, so I’m not sure which way it would turn out better.

I told them that this company does small business start-ups and that’s really what I want to know. I want to know that if I have to register with the state and obtain some kind of license that I’m doing it correctly. Rich of course uses for an example the way he’s doing it and we’re familiar with that somewhat, but I want to do it differently. I want the correct way to sell books on line and through the mail to people in IL and to people outside IL whether it be through friends and family or through book signings.

I told him I also would want to write off business expenses this year. His thought was that I could do this just through my regular taxes. If this is the case, then that is what the accountant will tell me. If there is a better way to do it, he will tell me that too. The lady who answered the phone named Cathy asked if I was going to want and incorporate. I told her what a small business we were and the general nature of selling online, through the mail and through the big wholesalers. I told her I have only one product, well really three products in that we have hard cover, soft cover, electronic, but then I’m not sure if it will be different products for the kindle explicitly or something specific for the other stores. Things like sales tax have to be taken care of and we should know that sort of thing up front so we know what to charge.

Rich is like you don’t have to do any of that, but my point, is that SHOULD you be doing that? I want to do it the right way. He said that we’re going to have to fill out quarterly taxes. And, I was like ok … if that’s what has to happen. He just isn’t getting the part that we are in a business.

Cathy said that I would be talking to Dennis … I had noted that he was the owner. She said it was just a small place with three family members. She didn’t identify which role she was in, but the voice sounded that she could be Dennis’ wife. I was grateful to find them and have so much comfort of them already by the kind of web site they’d left up. She seemed to appreciate getting that kind of feedback.

I just gave her a little information and pointed to the part about having sent an email to their info email. I don’t think she had looked at it, so we made sure to identify it to us. I didn’t want any double booking. I think I represented myself fairly and I did ask if the initial visit would be a charge, so she knows we’re already talking about a limited budget. She’ll see that when they look at our taxes. I sure hope I can find them no trouble. I do know where they are supposed to be. I don’t thing HR Block is open at this time of the year to ask if that would be necessary. The taxes are so simple at this point; I can’t imagine they would charge me more than HR Block. I think they charge a lot, especially because they are only inputting numbers and the program is doing all the work.

I’m glad I sent them ahead of time the materials. I took the phone in another room just so I wouldn’t have to deal with Rich at the time. I have to just remain calm in the prospect that I may be an adult and be capable of adult things. Look how far we’ve progressed so far. Our book is going into the second proof. That has to say something, doesn’t it? It didn’t just happen on its own. I think after we get back from the meeting, we are going to pay more attention to the small business material that the government puts out that we learned about through the accountant. Just want a better idea.

Oh yeah forgot about the PO Box too. Rich said that he would do it later; well you can see how well that isn’t settling. I think he forgot the name of his guy. So then we’re like, ok can you call Bob? Could you do that soon so I know how to schedule my day? If I have to take off early to meet this guy, I’m going to want to know soon. I just asked if he could be ready with this information within the next hour, because my meeting is due now, but shouldn’t last more than an hour. I also got an email from Brookfield Library, they have my card ready and we are going to need picking that up. We’re moving here.

Ok, used the washroom … we’re doing ok so far. Just like to progress this day. I looked at my hair and discovered that this is one of those days we’ve got Dresden curls. *Sigh* Not much to do about that. It seems like sister has been out of the building all day so it should be a pretty quiet meeting. Both the DSP and the client are ready. I think we’re going to call Carolyn after the meeting to see how she’s doing with Monday. I want to make sure she looks at what we sent her. As to the next thing, I think I’ve got this week to be doing one of several things. Most likely it won’t be until Friday or maybe early next week before getting the proof so we should be working on second edit of book two, going to the store to scout out our marketing plan, or doing something else that might be on the list from Maria.

She sounded busy and I’m not sure how she is about getting things accomplished.
I’m thinking too we should ask Carolyn about that missing paperwork and if she is going to need the page where we give credit or dedicate our book to. Hmm, maybe we can think of that now.

Is there anything special we want to do with a dedication? The regulars would be Rich, the boys, Sr. or Dr. Marvin. I just had a though about dedicating the book to my father and Sandy. This would seem of all the books I might right – be the right book to do.

This is exciting, but hard to start a business - I like it!

Morning, this morning we’re sticking with the track that we work on providing our own happiness. Yesterday we got kind of bummed out. You heard of part of it already basically, we lost the Rich connection, and then on his way home he called and asked if I wanted to go out to a movie with him and Bob and Marcia. I looked up the movie … it was Red. I had to tell him no, I wasn’t interested, but that should keep him from going. He did go after some amount of protest, but it added to a long day.

I’m not sure how it went exactly, but yesterday we figured out that you didn’ have to pay to become your own business in that the Federal Employee Identification Number (FEIN) is free. Seemed that everything I did I got grief for from Rich, but sometimes we work from two different minds … this is usually on account of our brains being separated. *Sigh*

We got into then working through Microsoft Accounting 2009 … Lordy it’s a bear if you don’t know general accounting principles. At one point I lost my information. Rich said that I just have to keep a paper ledger … might go with that for a bit, I sure do like that auto math though. Hmm, maybe we should then keep a ledger on Excel. Maybe we’ll do that … hold on.

AHA! We posted already a copy of the spreadsheet that we worked on this morning. That was productive. Rich had suggested that we use Excel for our costs and not worry about the big accounting package. We might do that later, but using Excel allowed us to write the regular commentary kind of stuff along with costs. I was very happy with the result. Most of the entries were made by going back over the saved emails. I’m usually pretty good about collecting the important stuff showing the progress of the project. I sent Rich a copy 

Hmm, it’s about 8:30 A.M. now. Rich just got up about a half hour ago. He’s watching the morning show, but we put on ear phones because we wanted to concentrate on the work here at the computer.

As to last night, we were having problem because of the accounting program as noted, but now we feel real good in having created something for Excel. It took a couple of hours, but I’m very happy with the result. We saved it and then printed it to our Facebook notes (without formatting) and we posted to our blog and sent copies to Rich, Carolyn and Dr. Marvin. I felt good also about shutting that down and getting back to the writing. It is a good marker task.

I know that I can’t write too long this morning because of the editing work ahead. Carolyn made sure to say that we had to get the proof back to her today.

There’s something that has been bothering us though in that we haven’t yet completed the work on the 18 questions asked to Carolyn on the 15th … we’re figuring we are going to give it one more try here and possibly update or at least conclude. Here we go … for about the fourth time Yeeks!

1. If the proof copy is ready to edit.
2. An intro to the marketing plan through Maria
3. If we will be assigning yet costs to the books
4. How many books will be ordered or at what stage we will do the ordering
5. If people will need to wait for a given amount of time between ordering with Friesen and receiving their book
6. What deadlines we are under
7. At what date will Dr. Marvin and Dr. Woollcott's sections need to be in
8. Under which title they the doctor's will be under
9. If there are any thoughts as to having read the Oprah paper - or other questions relating to her
10. Will I receive my own web page, or do you have suggestions toward this.
11. Will I soon get to see the cover
12. How's Natalie doing?
13. What will be the cost of doing the second book (I need to figure out budget)
14. Do I have to wait another long week to talk to you ... it was long!
15. Does your boss ever make comments on the books or book processes? Where is he at?
16. We'll think of more as we go ;)
17. When will some of the items like business cards or posters come in
18. When will we be posted at the Frisen press site (for sale, or upcoming)

Ok, by now the first proof is done and we are still at the 81% marker as to the editing. Need to finish this today. We promised it in Carolyn’s email box first thing Monday. Next, we had our intro to Maria and I think we wrote about that yesterday. We’re feeling pretty good about the meeting in general. We were bombarded though by Rich’s complications as Devil’s advocate and I believe that had a lot to do with the downcast day yesterday. Rich had been playing cards and we worked on the accounting package and then he got home and we never recovered even after having eaten dinner. We watched Solidad’s show on Black in America. The special talked about the church and the financial situation of three parishioners … it was very well done and I got something out of it. Basically, the Pastor’s message was to get out of debt and that was what he was doing with his very big church was preaching the message on how to handle finances. This supported his spiritual message rather than taking away from it. It had become his cause.

After Rich’s movie, he came home with ice cream, and that really helped the mood. Then he kind of snuck over to the couch under the guise that if we gave him a bit of a message we would feel better. We’d barely gotten off the couch until the ice cream walked in. *Sigh* we’re such a pushover. Yup yup … all forgiven. We knew that what was going on emotionally yesterday was more ourselves feeling bad about our own progress and that it really didn’t have anything to do with Rich. Maybe though too looking at it today was that we might have needed a break from the writing. It’s on our mind constantly and this week there was a LOT of it between getting in the Introduction from Dr. Marvin, meeting the marketing person, doing the web site AND editing the proof. Even though it’s the love of our endeavors we still sometimes need a break. Just as Carolyn might point out … better to have a break after we get in the copy. I think this is what publishing people do. They push to keep you on schedule. I like this about Carolyn.

Hmm, Missy is thinking she needs some time. We petted her for a few moments, but we’re not going over to the couch ... we’d definitely lose the next hour because we’d get caught into the show. I’m going to have to be careful today because our right forearm seems to be giving us trouble. Probably from the pounding we gave it yesterday during our periods of frustration. Hmm, good time to slip in now our horoscope. It still seems to be promising good things up ahead. I think the think that had come up that was so difficult and disheartening earlier in the year was work and in particular CARF.

It says, “At some point over the last year or so, you got out of a bad situation. In your mind, you may even feel like you escaped. But you were in control the entire time, even though you probably felt fearful, trapped, and much stressed. Now though you’re free. Yet you still feel nervous that what you left behind somehow poses a potential threat to your present life. It does NOT. In fact, it put you in a position to be in exactly the right place at the right time somewhere down the road. You’re getting close to an opportunity that wouldn’t have been if not for what you endured.”

The bad situation is best explained by CARF, but I think the part that helped was in meeting big deadlines. Maybe more specifically it has to do with my confidence and professionalism as a writer.

We fell asleep lying up against Rich and then walked us to bed about 10:30 P.M. Poor Rich he sure does go through a lot with us. Maybe what I learned from CARF also is the ramifications of avoiding. I know that I will feel better if I just get to the work. Which question next? Cost still depend on last page count on last proof … we’ll wait to see. I’m thinking that we are going to be under Carolyn’s number. We’ll explain to her our logic again, but then go with what she suggests. If it’s just up to me … we’ll keep the cost where the 14 hardcover books come in just at $500 purchased separately.

As to the ordering of books, we covered that pretty intensely with Rich yesterday.

Basically, we talked about the marketing part of going out and getting more business before we could afford it. He was talking about getting 100 books.

Neither of us know how quickly we’ll go through that, but then after we purchase for $900 the first set of hundred books … we’ll make a profit of like $1400, but that will have to get reinvested in getting more books. Let’s say we pay for another 100 soft books and 10 hard books. Hmm, seems like a bit of a quagmire.

Basically, the $1400 keeps reinvesting in more books. But then if we pay out $1400.
Let’s do this again

Ok, good good … I came up with a schedule and then sent it to Rich, Carolyn and Dr. Marvin. It’s a plan for how to do the at home book sales. The following is the summary I sent to Carolyn as a marked publishing goal.

I promise after this we're back to the editing. I'm not sure how hard it is to sell a book, but we're thinking here that we're going to hold book purchases to having an average of 100 soft cover books and 10 hard cover books per every new book in house. The basic reason we see of selling books by hand is to get enough to sell the next set and to pay for the cost of the next book. By July we should have enough to sell 650 books and have written our third book. By end of the year we should have sold 1090 books and have published our fourth book. We are just trying to figure out the numbers. I would take the extra $484 and $1992 (by the end of 2011 profits) and invest in the business as a restocking system by buying an extra set of 50 books for the first four books. From that point on, I would have enough so that every time my stock got down from 150 to 50, I would purchase another set of 100. Basically, the hand book sales are just to pay for more books so we always have books at hand and for the costs of publishing the next book.

The way we see it then ...royalty money directly from Friesen, Amazon, Barnes & Noble or any other bookseller will go toward profit that will be used for paying off my $100,000 debt (school loans, medical and car) ... after that ... we get a house! It seems to work in my mind. Please let me know if there's a fatal flaw in the way I'm thinking of this money? I don't think the hard line will be drawn this clearly, but my idea is to always keep an inventory of 50-150 (average 100) books each soft title and 10 hard title.

This is my goal! By the way we did calculations at $26 for soft cover and $36 for hard cover.

Ok, ok … can’t imagine losing ANY more time. YEEKS! It’s 11 A.M. but these goals are important too, right? Need to be having a plan! Oh Lordy scratch that … we forgot about the 18 questions let’s see if we can finish them by noon. Steady girls! This all though definitely answers the questions about how many we should order and at what times. Hmm, Carolyn says that it’s about 2-3 weeks in waiting for an order of books from Friesen. Obviously people will be able to buy from other locations at a quicker pace, but this gives me my general sense of order.

As to the deadlines we are under … the most prominent is to get the first proof edited today, or at least before Carolyn walks through the door tomorrow at 11 A.M. our time. Pswhoo! It’s like having TWO bosses! The deadline that we’re trying to hit with publishing at least to the Friesen site is by November 12-19th. And after that we’d hope closer to a week, but might have to wait for a month before Amazon and others pick it up. And, we should have a date of January 3rd, to be getting in the first edit to Julie and have it back from her by January 17th. Then we should have it first proof ready by 24th and be signing the final proof by Valentine’s Day. By then we should have our taxes, or it will be soon after. Ok, we just sent something to Julie asking her if those 2 weeks will work for her. The message seems to have disappeared, but these notes are here so we’ll wait to see if it shows back up before duplicating.

No worry on the good doctors, because by now they are all in. Still not sure as to if Carolyn has ideas from Oprah, we do know that it got handed over to Julie during our meeting and Julie is going to come up with a marketing plan so maybe that is in there. I’m disappointed in that I’ve not heard anything from the Oprah producers, Sarah Olson or Astraea. Eh, we will see in a while if it is worth getting a hold of them again. I’m sure they are all doing whatever too and to be sure, they are under no obligation from me.

As to the web page, it turned out Friesen didn’t have anything like that, but we have since found our own web page. A little further down the road we will go over with Carolyn the process of making payments and such. Maybe that will come down to us have x amount of books … hmm, still have to get those boxes for the books.

That’s another $100. Maybe it can be a part of Rich’s Christmas present to me 
I think we have hope we have $27 in the bank. I will wait for the mid-November check and then open a bank account with Brookfield. I want to get it started by this year so that we can record the finances for income taxes. I would like the Friesen publishing costs be written off as a business expense. I know it is going to cost more for calculating the taxes, but I want the books straight. Rich wasn’t confident of his accountant and I don’t want to pay

Ok, well not sure what exactly happened, but we ended up doing a lot of something else and then some simple talking to Bob and Rich … Rich treated to pizza for Bob helping him. I just got lucky and got to eat too 

We went over and looked into getting an accountant here in Brookfield. We found one that we liked a lot and sent him an email to get a hold of us. We also sent him a spreadsheet. He’s an accountant, right? His name is Dennis Gorman. We had all kinds of things on our spreadsheet … it’s like now our business plan. There is a page one and a page two … the second page is the 47 authors report. On the first page we titled it the Journey of Quite Frankly Ann Journal

The three pages are our actual journal from 8/13/10 through 10/24/10. Those pages list all the business activities we’ve had since starting including the costs involved. Then I put the first and second series of books and their production times. That sheet also lists the costs for the both series. The next sheet has our business addresses, phones, web sites, etc. Then we put in our IRS Employee Identification Number (EIN) that we registered for on Saturday. We then put on our book purchasing and expense chart. The next item is the back and front colored copy of our cover. The next four pages are the FriesenPress Contract. That’s got tons of money information. I’ve then got one sheet that explains where and how much I’m going to need paying for the boxes and the soft foam that goes around the books to ship. I then put on a copy each of Dr. Marvin’s and Dr. Woollcott’s intro/prefaces. I added also the part on how we split the priority of paying into the business or toward our debt as to earned income. I put down the profit sharing/will policy and where everything goes officially with me both alive and dead. I put down the philosophy of selling the book and where those profits go specifically as to either a reimbursement back into the business or the royalty checks that go to paying the $95,000 in debt (school, medical, and car). Then for good measure we add a picture or our dream house and its floor plans, because that’s the way we roll.

We are back after dinner and a movie and an hour drama. We weren’t in the right space to write or edit, but now it’s about 9:30 P.M. and I thought I should at least finish up for the night … We’ve tried soooo hard to get past these 18 questions. Who would have known they would create this much thought. Where did we leave off?

Let’s see … I think both the 47 autobiography research and the Oprah material probably went over to Maria. I’m not going to worry about that too much more. I got the new web page. We still don’t know how Natalie’s doing, but we did get to see the cover and we thought it was absolutely GORGEOUS!!! Erika did a FANTASTIC JOB!

As to the cost of doing the second book, we figured that out pretty much through the charts, but basically every new book is another Mass Media package so it’s going for another $1500, plus $900-1100 to pay the next round of 100 books, and we still don’t have it figured out how we’re going to pay for the book return insurance.

Fortunately, I did get my chances to talk with Carolyn, but not as often as I prefer. It seems that when we get something that we’re supposed to be doing on our end, we don’t talk so much until I can get something to her. I don’t want to be a disappointment, but this weekend is going to need being accounted for. Basically why didn’t we ever get to the editing? I know we were tired, but it seemed we busied ourselves either to the BUSINESS of owning a company or we were writing the next book. That can’t ever be anything, but a good excuse. Writing is good for writers! I have a staffing tomorrow at 1 P.M. but other than that we will work on preparing those last elusive 75 pages.

I didn’t get too much assurance about Carolyn’s boss. He seems to back up our girls, but I think he’s got everyone working way too hard. They all seem to be busting out about the seems. I think he’s the type to be taking care of the business parts which means hiring, but most likely it will be the girls that teach the new people how to do the work. I’m being conditioned that I might not keep Maria, but Carolyn is saying she’ll stick it out with me. I don’t know if we have a choice in breaking up our four person team, but I’m really going to want and hang on to Carolyn. I think like other authors find, she is very smart, able and easy to work with. I know the boss knows about us as a client, but I have no sense of confidence that he knows much about me other than the package I bought. That’s kind of a disappointment, and we’re going to try not to be doing something really special just to get his attention. Steady as she goes.

As to the posters, postcards, bookmarks, and business cards – my thoughts are here that Carolyn must have stated they come after the final proof is signed off. That would make sense. I hope they come sooner than later as to starting things up, but there’s a lot more editing and work to be doing with Maria on marketing first. Bob asked today where my first book signing is. I’m trying not to be leery just that it IS. Like all else the last question … HURRAH! Seems to be the question of when we’ll be posted to Friesen. I think this as well as the other happens after the sign-off. I’m thinking that it is about a week after the sign-off and we’ll be up past “upcoming” we will be formally on the market and that is supposed to be coming November 12-19th. We feel like we’re repeating the same things just to keep everything in memory.

After we get out a few more literal tasks, we are going to start going over the government’s idea on small businesses. I think that is the marker for the week. It’s more than selling books; it IS an entrepreneur sole propriety business. Wow. We actually are doing pretty well all considering. There’s a little more responsibility on our end, because the girls’ backgrounds are Canadian. Well, there are pluses and minuses to everything. I know Rich is going to be mad that I’m talking about an accountant, but we really don’t want to mess this up.

I want everything set up as it needs to be right away. Where the money is coming from? I really don’t know yet. We’ll have to see what his expenses and pay structure is like. Maybe if we come up with $500 in November, then another $400 in December and that would leave $300 for the accountant. This is late night thoughts, but it will help me sleep. Hmm, sure do hope we’re going to do ok with taxes this year. I need about $800 to make it. I’m just thinking that if we can cover ourselves with the accountant, it will make selling easier and I won’t have to worry about things like I’m thinking now we have to register for an IL business or sales license.

Someone is going to need teach me the rules. This is what Mr. Gorman’s site says that he can do. The thing too is that if we are doing the tax season to start now then maybe we will be able to get something down for the first quarter the business has no money, but it does have plenty of expenses. Hopefully, when the time comes he will also be able to refer us to a good attorney. Among other paperwork that I want done right for the business, he might also whip up a quick will. It seems like Mr. Gorman uses QuickBooks, so he might have someone set it up and I can learn to use it between things. Generally, I need just a few bookkeeping lessons. Lordy how am I going to afford it?
